Sightseeing Flight vs Aerobatic Flight

These are two different products that happen to share the word flight. What separates them is the category the aircraft is certified in and the rating the pilot holds, not how enthusiastically anybody banks.

Why the category is the whole story

Certification category defines the load factors an airframe is cleared for and the manoeuvres it may legally perform. A normal-category aircraft is not cleared for negative-G manoeuvres or sustained inverted flight. It also usually lacks the inverted fuel and oil system that keeps an engine running upside down.

This is why "adrenaline flights" and "flights with manoeuvres" advertised in a Cessna are a different product. Check the stated programme, aircraft limitations and pilot qualifications before comparing prices.

Why the aerobatic flight is shorter

The two offers have different programmes and operational requirements. Compare the advertised airborne time and what it includes. There is no fixed duration at which everyone stops enjoying aerobatics.

Which should you book

Book a sightseeing flight if the point is the view: a particular town from the air, a coastline, a photograph of your own house, or a gentle introduction for someone who is anxious about small aircraft. Book an aerobatic flight if the point is the sensation: loops, rolls, inverted flight, and finding out what six times your own weight feels like.

One useful test before you buy anything: ask for the aircraft type and registration, and ask whether the pilot holds an aerobatic rating. Both answers should be immediate and specific. Ours are Extra 300L, SP-EKS, and yes: Maciej Kulaszewski, FI(A), FAI Intermediate World Champion 2022.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a sightseeing flight and an aerobatic flight?

A sightseeing flight is flown in a normal or utility category aircraft at roughly +1G so you can look at the landscape. An aerobatic flight is flown in an aircraft certified in the aerobatic category by a pilot holding an aerobatic rating, and consists of figures with load factors up to +6G and -4G including inverted flight.

Can a Cessna 172 perform aerobatics?

No. It is certified in the normal or utility category, which does not permit negative-G manoeuvres or sustained inverted flight, and it lacks the inverted fuel and oil system needed for the engine to run upside down.

Why is an aerobatic flight shorter than a sightseeing flight?

Duration follows the package and flight plan. Tolerance varies, and a shorter flight does not eliminate risk.

Which is better for someone nervous about small aircraft?

A sightseeing flight is the gentler introduction. That said, some people who dislike airliners find aerobatics easier, because they can see out in every direction and can stop the sequence at any time.

How do I check that a flight is aerobatic?

Ask for the aircraft type and registration and whether the pilot holds an aerobatic rating. Both answers should be immediate and specific.
